Mike Olson found some speed, and with it delivered an impressive drive that also displayed the balance that is coming to mark racing in many divisions at State Park Speedway this year.

Olson won the 50-lap Auto Select Super Late Model feature main event of the Wilbert “Wib” Baumann Memorial, scoring his first feature win of the season and second ever at the track. The second-generation racer from Dorchester also became the fourth different super late model main winner in four race nights this season, and the third in weekly racing in the division at the track.

Olson got a run on the inside of leader Luke Fenhaus on lap 32, cleared him on the next lap and led the final 18 laps. He drove away for the feature win over Fenhaus, who finished as runner-up for the third time in as many weekly super late model features at State Park Speedway this year.

“I have to say thanks to all of my guys that helped with tonight, this thing was just fast,” said Olson in Brickner Family Auto Group Victory Lane after the race. “We changed some things in the shop this week and this thing was just better than it’s raced in the last season. The car was just awesome.”

Olson was hooked up all night, setting fast time in Fred Mueller Qualifying and then working from the sixth starting spot into second by the midway mark of the feature. He was behind only Fenhaus, who took the lead on lap 22 from early leader Derek Doerr and would stay up front through several restarts, including one on lap 26 with Olson on the outside of the front row.

Olson would choose the inside line on two ensuing restarts, and it paid off when he got inside of a loose Fenhaus on the backstretch on lap 32. Olson would pull away to win by half a straightaway, with Fenhaus second and Mark Mackesy coming home third.

The feature win was Olson’s first at State Park Speedway since Sept. 2012, and the first at the track in the familiar Olson family No. 64 that father Larry also previously raced. Mike Olson thanked his family after the race and also noted the team was racing for his stepmother Jeany, whose brother passed away on Wednesday, and dedicated the win to her.
